The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Huawei Technologies, has rolled out four new Intelligent Transport System, ITS,sites to enhance traffic management and monitor speed limits.
This initiative aims to further reduce traffic accidents by detecting overspeeding and ensuring smooth traffic flow.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during a press briefing on Thursday.
He emphasized that these new installations would complement the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and other traffic management solutions already in place.
“The newly installed checkpoint sites are specifically designed to monitor and detect speeding violations. One of these sites is located on Alapere, Ogudu Road, where the speed limit is set at 80km/h, and another is situated at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, where the speed limit is 60km/h,” Osiyemi explained. “These strategic locations are critical in curbing overspeeding, a major contributor to road accidents.”
In addition, e-police sites have been set up at key traffic points, including Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road, to identify a variety of traffic infractions such as running red lights, improper lane usage, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways.
Osiyemi appealed to drivers to adhere to the traffic laws, reminding them that penalties for violations are steep.

“The fine for running a red light is N20,000, while exceeding the speed limit incurs a N50,000 fine,” he stated.
Enforcement of these regulations will begin immediately, with motorists found in violation being sent SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service detailing the infraction and the fine.
“The primary aim of this system is not to punish but to promote responsible driving behavior, reduce accidents, and foster safer roadways,” Osiyemi emphasized. “We are committed to saving lives, protecting property, and ensuring orderliness in our transportation system.”
Also in attendance at the briefing were the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa; representatives from Huawei Technologies; and senior ministry officials.
