Award-winning filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up on the mindset and values that have propelled her to the top of Nigeria’s box office.
Known for delivering record-breaking hits and redefining Nollywood standards, Akindele shared personal insights into her creative journey and professional philosophy during a conversation with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo ahead of the upcoming WithChude live event.
Addressing the consistency that has marked her career, Akindele emphasized her disciplined approach to work. “I am very intentional with anything I am doing. I am an extremist; I am a perfectionist,” she said.
These qualities, she noted, are key drivers behind her return to the big screen after a brief hiatus, driven by her passion and commitment to excellence.

On how she manages to remain relevant in an ever-changing industry, Akindele highlighted the role of spirituality and self-awareness. “Firstly, it’s spiritual—it’s God’s grace, knowing yourself, and being original. I know when to stop, and I also do not dwell on accolades, even though I appreciate them,” she explained.
Hard work, she stressed, is the true game-changer. “A lot of people want to do what I’m doing, but I keep telling them: for you to be outstandingly successful, you need to work hard. Do the dirty work,” she said, underlining that perseverance is what separates sustained success from fleeting fame.
In a rare moment of vulnerability, Akindele also touched on the emotional toll of grief, especially following the loss of her mother. When asked how she remains emotionally grounded despite personal pain, she confessed, “I do not allow myself to break down, and it affected me after my mum’s death—my heart was aching. It’s necessary to process things and come back refreshed.”
The WithChude live event is scheduled for April 27 and will feature influential personalities across various industries.
