Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has officially joined the All Progressives Congress, APC, ending months of speculation.
The announcement came after a closed-door meeting of key stakeholders at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday.
Senator James Manager, addressing the press on behalf of the group, said the governor’s defection was in the interest of Delta’s overall development.
“This is a strategic move for the progress of the state. The entire PDP structure in Delta has now aligned with the APC,” Manager stated.
The move comes just months after the governor denied plans to dump the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, describing the earlier reports as political propaganda.
With his defection, Delta—long considered a PDP stronghold—joins the growing list of APC-led states in the South-South region.
Oborevwori’s decision has triggered political reactions across the state. While some APC leaders welcomed the defection as a boost to the party’s influence, others expressed reservations.

There are concerns over how the PDP’s internal factions and loyalists will react to what some describe as an unexpected political twist.
Despite the tension, sources close to the governor’s camp maintain that the decision was the result of wide consultation aimed at ensuring continued peace and development in the state.
Political observers say this could significantly alter the dynamics of Delta’s 2027 general election. With the PDP’s structure reportedly absorbed into the APC, opposition parties may need to rethink their strategies ahead of the next poll.
A formal declaration of the governor’s new party affiliation is expected on Monday, during a state-wide rally to be held in Asaba.
Party leaders are expected to use the occasion to solidify the new alignment and begin strategizing for future elections.
The development marks a significant turning point for Delta politics, positioning the APC as the new dominant force in the state.
