Vice-President Kashim Shettima was in Asaba Monday to formally receive Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other defectors into the APC.
The event, held at the Cenotaph, attracted high-ranking members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, signaling a major political shift in Delta State.
Oborevwori, alongside his predecessor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and several Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, stakeholders, officially joined the ruling party, ending Delta’s long-standing PDP dominance since 1999.
Vice-President Shettima was welcomed at the Asaba International Airport by an impressive delegation of APC governors, including those from Nasarawa, Imo, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kogi, Gombe, Lagos, Benue, and Yobe States.
Also present were APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu and Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

During the ceremony, party leaders emphasized that the defection was a strategic move aimed at strengthening Delta State’s alignment with the federal government to drive development projects across the region.
Governor Oborevwori, addressing the gathering, said the decision was made in the best interest of the people of Delta State, stressing the need for unity, growth, and better collaboration with the centre.
The mass defection has sparked a debate within Delta APC ranks. Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege insists he remains the party’s leader in the state, despite the influx of new stakeholders.
Keyamo and several party faithful urged members to embrace the new development and work together for the progress of the state.
The APC leadership views the development as a major breakthrough in its bid to consolidate its influence in the South-South region, historically dominated by the PDP.
