Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti says his administration has so far paid N72 billion from the N138 billion debt inherited from previous governments in 2023.
He disclosed this during a monthly media briefing at the Government House, Umuahia, on Wednesday, while stressing commitment to financial discipline.
Citing figures from the Debt Management Office, Otti said the state’s current debt stands at N66 billion, with no new loans acquired.
“We have paid down N72 billion of inherited debt and have not borrowed a dime,” he said.
Otti described the feat as a result of prudent financial management, goodwill, and securing favourable terms in government transactions.
He also restated his resolve to ensure no public funds are misused, pointing out that the inherited debt may even be higher when salaries, pensions, and contractors’ arrears are included.
In healthcare, the governor reported progress on “Project Ekwueme,” which targets the renovation and construction of 200 primary health centres, with 103 already at various completion stages.
The state, in partnership with the World Bank, is also delivering 67 additional centres. Retrofitting of general hospitals has started, with improved remuneration and recruitment of 771 new health workers approved.

Otti further announced a $1.3 billion Medical City Project to be launched on May 29.
“The funding has been secured through a capable partner. Nigeria loses over $2 billion to medical tourism yearly; we aim to reclaim at least 10 per cent,” he said.
In education, he said free and compulsory basic education has led to a surge in enrolment, with 700,000 pupils currently benefiting.
To maintain quality, government has approved the employment of 9,000 new teachers.
On infrastructure, he confirmed that the long-awaited Port Harcourt Road in Aba, handled by Julius Berger, will be completed by mid-May and inaugurated on May 29.
The governor restated his zero-tolerance for crime and urged residents to remain alert, adding that steps have been taken to boost agricultural productivity across the state.
He also cautioned media outlets to verify reports through official channels to avoid misinformation.
