A Department of State Services, DSS, operative on Tuesday testified that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, admitted to operating an illegal radio station and inciting the public to attack police officers.
Led in evidence by lead prosecutor Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, the witness disclosed that Kanu not only led IPOB but also founded its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.
The witness identified as BBB, for security purposes, stated that Kanu operated Radio Biafra, which transmitted on 102.1 FM and 88.0 FM without a license from the National Broadcasting Commission.
The DSS official stated that in July 2021, he was part of a team that conducted an interrogation after a directive from the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, calling for an investigation into Kanu’s alleged terrorist activities.
During questioning, Kanu was shown the AGF’s letter and voluntarily gave a statement in the presence of his lawyers, including Alloy Ejimakor.
BBB said the IPOB leader listened to recordings of his broadcasts in which he allegedly called for attacks on police officers and admitted that the voice was his.

The statement session was also captured on video, which the prosecution attempted to tender along with the AGF’s letter and a certificate of compliance.
However, defence counsel Kanu Agabi, SAN objected, arguing that the defence team had not received those materials beforehand.
He insisted that the defendant is constitutionally entitled to review all documents the prosecution plans to rely on. Awomolo acknowledged the oversight and expressed readiness to provide the documents immediately.
Ruling on the matter, Justice Omotosho agreed with the defence and ordered the prosecution to furnish the defendant with all necessary materials, in accordance with Section 36 of the Constitution. The judge adjourned the case to May 7 for continuation of testimony by the DSS operative.
Earlier, another DSS operative, identified as PW1 or AAA, concluded his testimony. Under cross-examination, he stated that he was aware Kanu was accused of inciting violence against the police but not involved in drafting the original 15-count charge—eight of which have since been struck out.
