Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, marked the 2025 Children’s Day with a special celebration in Abuja, where she launched the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment, AGILE, project.

The initiative aims to expand access to quality education for girls across Nigeria, particularly in underserved and vulnerable communities.

During the event, which was attended by students, teachers, parents, government officials, and development partners, the First Lady emphasized the importance of investing in the education and well-being of Nigerian children, especially girls.

She described AGILE as a transformative program that not only seeks to reduce the number of out-of-school girls but also to empower them with skills necessary for lifelong learning and self-reliance.

AGILE is a World Bank-supported initiative implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with state governments. The project is currently operational in several states, targeting improvements in school infrastructure, digital learning tools, teacher training, menstrual hygiene management, and scholarships for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Senator Tinubu highlighted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes education, social welfare, and youth development. She reiterated her commitment to championing causes that promote children’s rights, reduce gender disparities, and ensure inclusive education nationwide.

“This project is not just about schooling; it is about equipping our girls with the tools to lead, innovate, and thrive in society,” the First Lady said.

The Children’s Day celebration featured cultural performances, exhibitions, and testimonials from young beneficiaries of educational programs. It also served as a platform to renew calls for stronger policy implementation to safeguard children’s rights, end child labor, and combat all forms of abuse and neglect.

Stakeholders at the event lauded the First Lady for her advocacy and called for greater collaboration between government, private sector, and civil society to sustain the momentum of AGILE and similar projects.

The event concluded with the First Lady urging all Nigerians to “protect, educate, and empower every child,” describing them as the nation’s most valuable resource.
