The Board of Trustees, BoT, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called for forgiveness, reconciliation, and unity among its members amid rising concerns over high-profile defections weakening the party’s political base.
In a statement released following a closed-door meeting in Abuja, the BoT expressed deep worry over the wave of recent defections of PDP governors, lawmakers, and stakeholders to rival parties — particularly the All Progressives Congress and Labour Party — describing the trend as a dangerous erosion of the party’s relevance and internal solidarity.
BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, lamented that internal wrangling, unresolved grievances, and a lack of cohesive leadership had led to the exodus of key figures who once played vital roles in building the PDP into a dominant national force.
“The defections are not just about politics. They are symptomatic of a party that is bleeding from within,” Wabara said. “If we must survive, we must heal. And healing starts with honest dialogue and forgiveness.”

Sources within the party confirmed that at least three state governors, several National Assembly members, and hundreds of grassroots politicians have either defected or are on the verge of leaving, citing marginalization, imposition of candidates, and lingering leadership disputes following the 2023 general elections.
Wabara and other BoT members urged all aggrieved factions to return to the table for meaningful reconciliation. He emphasized that the BoT was committed to acting as an impartial body to mediate and guide the party back to unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The BoT also warned that unless the party stemmed the tide of defections and internal sabotage, it risked losing its identity as the main opposition and voice of alternative governance in Nigeria.
Political observers say the party’s survival hinges on whether it can implement genuine reforms, rebuild trust, and reestablish national cohesion among its fragmented structures.
