The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, operating under Operation Hadin Kai has destroyed a major Improvised Explosive Device, IED, factory and several terrorist gun trucks in Kwaltiri, a location within the notorious Tumbuktu Triangle of Borno State.

The airstrikes, executed on Wednesday, came after actionable intelligence revealed the presence of terrorist fighters and equipment in the area.

According to a statement released by the Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the operation marked a significant victory in Nigeria’s ongoing counter-terrorism campaign in the North East.

“Surveillance missions confirmed the existence of an IED-making facility and the movement of terrorist vehicles in Kwaltiri. These were promptly targeted and destroyed with precision strikes carried out by NAF combat aircraft,” Ejodame said.

The operation reportedly eliminated dozens of fighters, destroyed gun trucks and disrupted logistics and command structures of the terrorists, significantly weakening their operational capacity.

“This strike represents a substantial blow to the insurgents’ ability to plan and carry out attacks. It disrupted not only their weapons production but also their supply and mobility networks,” the spokesperson added.

The Tumbuktu Triangle, which spans across Lake Chad and the border areas of Nigeria, Chad, and Cameroon, has long been a hideout for Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters.

The difficult terrain and dense cover make it a strategic area for staging attacks against military and civilian targets.

Wednesday’s successful operation is part of intensified air offensives in recent weeks, aimed at flushing out remnants of terrorist cells in the region.

Ejodame reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to supporting ground troops, maintaining aerial dominance, and ensuring the safety of citizens in affected regions.

“This operation reinforces NAF’s resolve to degrade terrorist capabilities and enhance security in the North East,” he said.

Security analysts have praised the operation as timely and effective, especially as the insurgents have in recent months escalated the use of homemade bombs in ambush attacks and sabotage missions targeting both civilian infrastructure and military convoys.
