Leicester City has officially parted ways with Dutch football legend and manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, bringing an end to a turbulent seven-month tenure marked by relegation from the English Premier League.
The announcement was made on Friday, June 27, 2025, nearly ten weeks after the club’s demotion to the second-tier Championship was confirmed.
In a statement issued by the club, Leicester confirmed that it had “mutually agreed” to terminate Van Nistelrooy’s contract with immediate effect.
The 48-year-old had taken over the managerial reins in November 2024, replacing Steve Cooper in a desperate attempt to steer the club away from the drop zone. Unfortunately, his arrival could not reverse the team’s declining fortunes.
“Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the club,” Leicester said. “He approached the role with professionalism, integrity, and a clear commitment to our goals — including the integration of several promising academy talents into the senior squad.”
Van Nistelrooy, a former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, began his tenure with optimism, securing four points from his first two matches
. However, that initial promise quickly faded. Leicester suffered a calamitous run of 15 losses in 16 matches, including a record-setting streak of nine consecutive home defeats without scoring a single goal — a new low in top-flight history.
In his farewell statement, Van Nistelrooy expressed gratitude for his time at the club despite the difficult circumstances. “I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club,” he said.

The former PSV Eindhoven manager reportedly requested talks with the club’s hierarchy after relegation was confirmed, but internal discussions were delayed for weeks. Ultimately, both parties agreed that a fresh start was needed.
Leicester’s relegation follows a historic high just nine years ago when the club stunned the world by winning the 2015/2016 Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri.
After being relegated in 2023, the Foxes bounced back to the Premier League for the 2024/25 season — only to be relegated again at the end of that campaign, alongside Ipswich Town and Southampton.
Looking ahead, Leicester will begin their Championship campaign on August 10 with a home match against Sheffield Wednesday. However, further challenges loom. The club is currently under investigation for alleged financial rule breaches, which could result in a points deduction.
As the Foxes plan for life in the Championship, attention now turns to finding a replacement capable of rebuilding a broken squad, restoring fan faith, and guiding Leicester City back to the Premier League.
