Atletico Madrid have intensified their efforts to sign Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, with fresh talks held over a move that could see the Argentine defender leave north London before the close of the summer transfer window.
Romero, who signed a new four-year contract with Spurs in August 2025, is now widely expected to depart the club after a difficult campaign in which Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League.
The 28-year-old centre-back has attracted interest from several European clubs, including Inter Milan, but Atletico Madrid have emerged as the frontrunners for his signature. The Spanish side, managed by fellow Argentine Diego Simeone, have long admired Romero and are now pushing to complete a deal.
Reports indicate that discussions between Atletico and the player’s representatives are progressing well, with personal terms not expected to pose any obstacle. Tottenham are also understood to be fully aware of Atletico’s interest as negotiations continue.

Despite the setbacks, Romero remains highly regarded across Europe because of his aggressive defending, aerial strength and ability to play out from the back. Atletico believe his style of play would suit Simeone’s tactical approach, making him a key target as the club seeks to challenge for major honours in Spain and Europe.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has previously acknowledged that players should not be prevented from leaving if they are determined to seek a new challenge.
“I will respect the will of the players if they want to leave,” the Italian coach recently said, suggesting the club could be open to negotiations should an acceptable offer arrive.
While Romero’s future appears increasingly uncertain, Tottenham are moving to secure the services of another important defender. Dutch centre-back Micky van de Ven is reportedly close to signing a new five-year contract, providing the club with greater defensive stability should Romero complete a move away.
For Atletico Madrid, signing Romero would represent one of their biggest acquisitions of the transfer window, adding experience, leadership and international pedigree to a squad determined to compete for both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League next season. Meanwhile, Tottenham face a crucial decision as they weigh whether to cash in on their captain or retain one of their most influential defenders for another campaign.
