The Federal Government has put the presidential jet Boeing 737-700 Business Jet, BBJ, up for sale in Switzerland.

This move marks a notable shift in the presidential air fleet, following the acquisition of a new Airbus A330.

The decision comes amid growing public pressure on the government to reduce spending and improve financial transparency.

According to aircraft marketplace Controller, the BBJ is currently undergoing inspection and sale preparations at AMAC Aerospace in Basel, Switzerland—the same company that assisted with the recent Airbus purchase.

Originally acquired in 2005 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the BBJ has served as the primary presidential aircraft for almost two decades. Since entering service, the jet has logged just under 4,000 flight hours and 1,881 landings.

The aircraft features a five-zone layout that seats 33 passengers and eight crew members. Luxurious amenities include a private bedroom with shower, VIP office, conference and dining area, and a mix of first- and business-class seating. It is also fitted with Ka-band internet and advanced avionics like ADS-B Out, CPDLC, and FANS 1/A, ensuring compliance with international safety and communication standards.

In July 2024, the presidency received a refurbished Airbus ACJ330-200, now registered as 5N-FGA, to replace the aging BBJ. The new jet features a bedroom suite, office space, and a mix of premium and economy seating options.

A reported malfunction during a flight to Saudi Arabia raised reliability concerns about the BBJ within the National Assembly. Though the aircraft underwent partial refurbishment in July 2024—including new carpeting, upgraded first-class seats, and C1-C2 inspections—the decision was made to retire it.

Officials confirmed the BBJ has been consistently hangar-stored and maintained professionally, though it is not enrolled in an engine maintenance program. Both of its CFM56-7BE engines are listed as “on condition,” meaning they are maintained based on performance but lack guaranteed coverage.

Neither the aircraft’s asking price nor the sale timeline has been made public by AMAC Aerospace or the Nigerian government.
