The United Kingdom has officially opened applications for the 2026 edition of its prestigious Chevening Scholarship Programme, offering aspiring leaders from around the world a chance to pursue a fully funded one-year master’s degree at top UK universities.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that applications opened on Tuesday, and will run until October 7, 2025.

Funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and various partner organisations, Chevening is the UK government’s global scholarship scheme, designed to nurture future influencers, policymakers, and change-makers.

Launched in 1983, the programme has supported over 60,000 professionals worldwide, including more than 1,500 Nigerians who have leveraged the opportunity to advance their education and leadership capacity across diverse fields.

The British High Commission in Nigeria reaffirmed the country’s commitment to empowering emerging talents through the Chevening scheme. “For over 40 years, Chevening has attracted brilliant minds from across the globe. These scholars go on to create meaningful impact in their home countries,” the High Commission said.

Emma Hennessey, Head of Scholarships at the UK’s FCDO, highlighted the rigorous selection process as a hallmark of Chevening’s prestige. “The programme selects individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership, networking abilities, and a clear commitment to driving change,” she noted.

She encouraged potential applicants to reflect deeply on their achievements and aspirations. “Even those who feel they haven’t yet developed strong leadership or networking skills can build experiences to strengthen future applications,” she added.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Montgomery, described the Chevening Scholarship as more than a degree opportunity. “It is a gateway into a global community of innovators, public policy shapers, and professionals dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing challenges,” he said.

Montgomery urged qualified Nigerians to seize the opportunity, noting, “Whether your passion lies in entrepreneurship, diplomacy, research, or civil society, the Chevening Scholarship is your chance to deepen your expertise, expand your international network, and lead positive change.”

He advised applicants to begin the process early and make full use of the extensive guidance materials available. “Prospective candidates can submit their applications via chevening.org/apply and consult chevening.org/guidance for advice on putting forward a competitive submission,” he added.

The UK government says it remains committed to investing in human capital globally through programmes like Chevening, which bridges academic excellence and development goals.
