The London side went ahead in the 39th minute through defender Micky van de Ven, who scored from a rebound after PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier tipped a shot onto the crossbar. Just three minutes into the second half, newly appointed captain Cristian Romero doubled the lead with a powerful header.
PSG, despite a shortened off-season due to their recent Club World Cup final, refused to give up. Substitute Lee Kang-in reignited hope with a thunderous strike from outside the area in the 85th minute. The momentum swung fully in their favor in stoppage time when Gonçalo Ramos headed home Ousmane Dembélé’s cross to make it 2-2, sending the match to penalties.
The shootout began nervously as PSG’s Vitinha missed their first attempt. However, crucial saves from Chevalier and misses from Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven and Mathys Tel kept PSG in the contest. Nuno Mendes then stepped up to score the decisive penalty, securing a historic triumph for the French club.
The win adds to PSG’s already remarkable year, following their victories in the Champions League, Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and Trophée des Champions. Captain Marquinhos, marking his 13th season at the club, praised the team’s mental strength despite limited preparation time.
For Tottenham, the loss was painful but encouraging. Manager Thomas Frank praised his players’ performance for most of the match and acknowledged PSG as “possibly the best team in the world right now.”
