Mr. Chukwuma Dike, Project Lead and co-founder of Wikiactivate Africa, has advocated the use of Artificial Intelligence, AI, responsibly, cautioning against over-reliance on the tech.
Dike gave the advice on Tuesday in Abuja at the Wikimedia Technology and Policies training with the theme: `AI and Plagiarism awareness.’
He said that Artificial Intelligence should be used to assist not as a replacement for human intellect.
“We can see that Artificial Intelligence is actually in circulation now and people need to know how to use them in so many aspects of their life.
“But today we concentrated more on how you use them in the Wikipedia space and how to detect and make sure that we don’t vandalize articles and writers that are already on the space with the use of AI.

“People should not see it as something that will cripple them. It shouldn’t cripple their intellectual capabilities, rather it should be an assistant to them to do something wonderful,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of striking a balance between Artificial Intelligence usage and human judgment.
According to him, Artificial Intelligence can be valuable for tasks such as grammatical corrections and translations but should not replace human creativity and decision-making.
Dike said the training focused on the benefits and pitfalls of its usage, particularly in the context of Wikipedia editing.
He further said that participants were advised on how to harness it’s potential while avoiding over-reliance on technology.
“Artificial Intelligence, if not used very well, can make you actually be dumb and lazy. That is why we always suggest that you use AI as an assistant,” he said.
He advised parents and teachers to guide their wards and students on the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence tools.
Dike said the training was part of Wikiactivate Africa’s efforts to promote digital literacy and awareness among young people in Africa.
He also said that it was the organization’s first physical training on AI usage following previous virtual sessions.
He encouraged participants to view Artificial Intelligence as a tool that could enhance their work, rather than a replacement for human capabilities.
