In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Kyiv launched a series of drone strikes against Moscow on Monday, following Russia’s announcement of a successful test of its nuclear-powered cruise missile, the Burevestnik.
This missile, also known by its NATO designation SSC-X-9 Skyfall, is claimed by Russian officials to be capable of evading existing missile defense systems and possessing a near-unlimited range.
The test flight reportedly lasted approximately 15 hours, covering a distance of about 8,700 miles, and was described by President Vladimir Putin as a demonstration of a weapon “no one else in the world possesses
The Burevestnik’s development has been shrouded in controversy due to safety concerns. A previous test in 2019 resulted in a catastrophic explosion that killed five Russian scientists, raising fears about the missile’s reliability and potential environmental impact. Critics have dubbed it the “flying Chornobyl” due to the possibility of radioactive exhaust emissions during flight.
In response to Russia’s missile test, Kyiv intensified its military actions. Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow, damaging residential buildings and temporarily disrupting airport operations.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have downed 193 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 34 aimed at Moscow. Despite these claims, Ukrainian authorities did not officially comment on the strikes but have previously stated that such operations aim to target critical Russian war infrastructure.
International reactions to these developments have been swift. U.S. President Donald Trump criticized President Putin’s missile test, urging him to focus on ending the ongoing war in Ukraine rather than pursuing provocative military advancements. Trump emphasized that the United States possesses formidable nuclear capabilities and does not require additional missile tests to demonstrate strength.
The escalation has further strained diplomatic relations between Russia and the West. A planned summit between President Trump and President Putin was postponed, with both sides citing a lack of progress on peace negotiations.
The United States has indicated the possibility of imposing additional sanctions on Russia’s oil sector if the conflict continues without resolution.
The situation remains fluid, with both nations engaging in a high-stakes game of military demonstrations and strategic signaling. The international community watches closely, concerned about the potential for further escalation and the implications for global security.
