The Kwara Government has integrated eye-care services into its Primary Healthcare Centers, PHCs, as it trains 30 additional health workers.
The training, which held on Monday in Ilorin, was organized by Kwara State Primary Healthcare Development Agency in collaboration with VisionSpring, a global social enterprise.
The agency’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Nusirat Elelu, said the programme was part of ongoing efforts of the government to integrate eye care services across PHCs in Kwara.
Elelu stated that the training had participants from Ilorin West, Ilorin East, Ilorin South, Edu, Patigi, Kaiama and Baruten Local Government Areas of the state.
“The training focuses on equipping participants with practical knowledge and skills in basic eye screening, vision assessment, data collation and referral protocols,” she said.

She reaffirmed the commitment of Gov. Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara in delivering people-centered healthcare services.
“The government also commits to ensuring that every community has access to essential health interventions, including eye-care.
“The exercise is a vital component of the Nigeria Jigi-Bola spectacle initiative.
“Over 22,200 free reading glasses have been distributed across more than 30 PHC centers in the state,” she said.
Elelu commended VisionSpring for supporting and collaborating with the state government.
The Programme Manager, PHC Power Project, VisionSpring, Dr Sa’ad Koki, commended the participants for their enthusiasm.
Koki urged participants to apply the knowledge gained in their respective facilities.
“This is to ensure accurate reporting and effective service delivery, “he said.
He reaffirmed Vision Spring’s commitment to supporting the state government in strengthening primary eye care and improving vision access for all.
It was reported that the training brings the total to 90 workers trained across 45 PHC facilities.
