President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded Nigerian scholar and sustainability expert, Professor Ademola Adenle, for his outstanding contributions to science and sustainable development.
He celebrated the scholar for winning the inaugural World Academy of Sciences–M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace, describing the recognition as a source of pride for Nigeria.
In a statement from the State House, the President described Professor Adenle’s global recognition as a remarkable milestone and a source of pride for Nigeria, reflecting the nation’s growing influence in agricultural innovation and scientific advancement.
At the State House reception in Abuja, President Tinubu commended the award-winning academic for his groundbreaking work in agricultural innovation policy, biosciences, renewable energy, and public health — areas that have driven sustainable solutions for rural and marginalised communities across Africa and beyond.
He lauded Professor Adenle for bringing honour to Nigeria and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen food security, enhance climate resilience, and foster innovation in agriculture. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari (CON), was also present at the meeting.
Professor Adenle made history as the first-ever recipient of the prestigious global award, presented by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 7, during the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, India.

Described as a “mini Nobel Peace Prize,” the award was established by The World Academy of Sciences in honour of the late Professor M.S. Swaminathan — the “Father of India’s Green Revolution” — whose pioneering work transformed India’s food systems and inspired generations of scientists across the developing world.
Professor Adenle, who serves as Senior Special Adviser on Agricultural Innovation in Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, was recognised for his exceptional contributions to food security, climate justice, and the empowerment of vulnerable populations.
During the meeting, Professor Adenle announced plans to launch the Women in Biosciences Initiative, aimed at improving rural agricultural productivity through training, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
The programme will also tackle malnutrition and waterborne diseases, while promoting renewable energy — especially solar power — to curb energy poverty.
The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation across Africa and Asia, extending Swaminathan’s enduring legacy of integrating science with social progress.
At the award ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Professor Adenle as “a beacon of hope” for his dedication to solving humanity’s most pressing challenges through science and sustainable development.
