Delegates at the ongoing 2025 Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, Elective National Convention in Ibadan on Saturday unanimously confirmed Umaru Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party.
The motion to ratify Damagum’s leadership was moved by Tony Abineri, Chairman of the Edo State PDP, before more than 3,000 accredited delegates at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba. The motion was seconded by Edward Marshal, fulfilling Section 32 of the amended PDP Constitution.
Abineri said, “I move the motion for the ratification of Umaru Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party, in accordance with Section 32 of our Constitution.”
The two-day convention is expected to produce a new chairman through a nationwide voting exercise by delegates.
However, developments within the party point strongly toward continuity.
In a related twist, there are strong indications that former Sokoto State Governor, Kabiru Turaki, may also emerge unopposed as the next National Chairman, having remained the sole candidate in the race. Delegates are expected to adopt him through a majority vote.

With delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory present, party stakeholders say the convention could become a defining moment for internal restructuring and the PDP’s 2025 electoral strategy.
Addressing the convention, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who also serves as Vice-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, praised party members for their resilience.
“It took a long, stressful battle to arrive at this point. The memory of the 2025 convention will remain evergreen, not only for our members but for the entire nation,” Makinde said.
Further details from the convention proceedings are still emerging.
