Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is cautiously engaging with a US-drafted peace proposal on the ongoing war with Russia, even though the plan appears to reflect several of Moscow’s key demands.
In his nightly address, Zelensky stressed Ukraine’s commitment to diplomacy, emphasizing that the country seeks constructive, honest, and efficient negotiations without making hasty statements.
The proposed plan reportedly includes concessions that Ukraine has previously rejected, such as ceding control of the Donbas region, reducing the size of its armed forces, and barring the presence of international troops.
Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Yurchyshyn told the Kyiv Independent that Washington appears to be pushing for a rapid peace that favors the side it perceives as weaker.
Ukraine’s position may have been weakened in recent weeks by Russia’s territorial gains in the east and repeated long-range strikes on the country’s power grid, leaving many areas facing outages.
Allegations of serious corruption within Ukraine’s government have also triggered political infighting, further complicating Kyiv’s ability to focus exclusively on the war effort.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has acknowledged that achieving peace will require difficult compromises from both sides.
The draft plan reportedly promises “reliable security guarantees” for Ukraine and suggests that some frozen Russian assets could be used for reconstruction.
While it excludes NATO membership for Ukraine, it leaves the door open for European Union integration.
European nations, including the UK and France, appear to have had little input in drafting the plan, which rules out a foreign reassurance force in the event of a ceasefire.

European allies are reportedly pressuring Washington and Kyiv to ensure their perspectives are considered.
Time is a critical factor. US officials working under President Donald Trump are pursuing an aggressive timeline measured in weeks rather than months, and are preparing to travel to Moscow soon.
Efforts to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky together in direct negotiations seem to have been abandoned, leaving the US to act as the primary mediator.
Trump, who has repeatedly claimed he can quickly end the war, is reportedly losing patience and is focused on pushing both sides to sign a deal.
Despite this, Zelensky remains open to working with Washington to explore a solution while safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and strategic interests.
The situation underscores growing tensions between US urgency for a peace settlement, European calls for a balanced approach, and Ukraine’s own need to preserve territorial integrity and national security in ongoing negotiations with Russia.
