The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, has stressed that accountability across the federal, state and local governments remains central to Nigeria’s quest for sustainable national development.
Speaking during a church thanksgiving service held in his honour to mark his 72nd birthday anniversary at St. John the Baptist Cathedral, Gboko, Benue State, Akume said meaningful development can only be achieved when all tiers of government work together with transparency and responsibility.
He noted that national development is a collective task that requires synergy among the three tiers of government, adding that no single level can deliver sustainable progress in isolation.
The SGF urged state and local governments to ensure prudent management and judicious utilisation of the increased federal allocations they currently receive, particularly under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Akume emphasised that such resources should be channelled into projects and programmes that directly impact the grassroots, improve living standards and stimulate economic growth in communities across the country.
Reflecting on his life and years of public service, the SGF expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to serve Nigeria through both the civil service and partisan politics.

He said that despite limited resources, God had enabled him to touch lives and empower many people, describing service to humanity as one of his greatest fulfilments.
The SGF also called on Nigerians to continue to support the Tinubu administration, noting that the government’s focus on infrastructure development and economic reforms is aimed at laying a solid foundation for long-term national growth.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Gboko, Most Rev. William Amove Avenya, the Bishop of Katsina-Ala Diocese, Most Rev. Isaac Dugu, described Akume’s 72nd birthday as a significant milestone with positive implications for Benue State and Nigeria as a whole.
Bishop Dugu urged prominent sons and daughters of Benue State holding positions of authority to rise above political differences and work in unity for the overall development of the state.
He stressed that unity among leaders remains essential for peace, progress and good governance.
The thanksgiving service attracted clergy, political leaders, traditional rulers and well-wishers from within and outside Benue State, who joined the SGF in prayers and goodwill messages to mark the occasion.
