2014 La Liga winners Atlético Madrid have stepped up their pursuit of Nigeria-eligible defender Honest Ahanor as they look to strengthen their backline ahead of next season.
The highly rated youngster, currently on the books of Atalanta, has emerged as one of the most exciting defensive prospects in Serie A.
The 18-year-old has played 26 games for Raffaele Palladino’s side across all competitions, and his performances have caught the attention of several top clubs.
Scouts from Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest have all monitored his development closely in recent weeks.

Atletico Madrid push to sign Honest Ahanor
Napoli have identified the youngster as a priority target, but it is Atletico Madrid who are most keen on the services of the Italian born to Nigerian parents.
As per Fichajes, Diego Simeone is understood to value Ahanor’s anticipation, strength in duels, and recovery pace, a core value of the Atleti backline, considering Jose Maria Gimenez will leave at the end of the season.
The market value of the centre-back is around €25m. Still, Atletico Madrid are well aware that Atalanta will at least ask for double that to enter into negotiations to let the youngster leave.
Napoli’s interest also means Los Rojiblancos have to act fast before the Italian giants swoop up Ahanor.
The 18-year-old Nigerian defender has a release clause worth around €50-65 million in his contract with Atalanta, but Atleti are hoping to settle for at least something lower before the summer transfer window opens.
Ahanor’s versatility has also drawn praise, as he is comfortable playing in a traditional center-back role or as part of a back three, giving Simeone tactical flexibility. His composure on the ball and ability to read the game make him a standout prospect despite his young age.
Atlético Madrid is reportedly in talks with intermediaries to gauge Atalanta’s willingness to negotiate, with sources suggesting that early engagement could give the Spanish club an edge over rivals like Napoli and English Premier League suitors. The timing of the move will be crucial to ensure integration before pre-season preparations begin.
For the teenager, a move to Atlético offers a chance to develop under one of Europe’s most respected defensive-minded coaches and compete in La Liga and European competitions, potentially fast-tracking his progression to the Nigerian senior national team should he commit to representing the Super Eagles.
