Barewa RFC on Saturday defeated Cowrie RFC 19-0 to win the Atlantic Rugby 7s tournament in Lagos.

The final, staged at Rugby School Nigeria, saw Barewa dominate possession, defend resolutely and convert chances clinically.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the tournament adopted the fast-paced rugby sevens format. Organisers said the competition was designed to deepen rugby development and strengthen domestic competition across Nigeria.

In the women’s category, AJ Sharks edged Edo Queens 7-0 to emerge champions.

AJ Sharks controlled the contest with disciplined defending and effective attacking movement.

Speaking after the event, Azeez Ladipo, General Manager of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, praised the players.

“This competition was created to give players game time and help us rebuild domestic rugby,” he said.

He described the tournament as a steppingstone toward a larger international rugby event later this year.

The competition featured 11 teams from across the federation, with participating teams representing Kano, Rivers, Edo, Ogun and Lagos states.

NAN reports the Nigeria Police Force also fielded a team.

“This platform helps us identify emerging talents for future national assignments,” Ladipo said.

He said preparations were already underway for the upcoming Africa Rugby Sevens in Mauritius.

Also speaking, Nti Martin of Sportickeroof highlighted technological innovations introduced during the competition.

He said Sportickeroof deployed digital ticketing and accreditation systems for the tournament.

“Participants and spectators could access tickets and accreditation without internet connectivity,” Martin said.

He noted that the system improved access, efficiency and overall event coordination.

Martin added that increased digital visibility would strengthen rugby’s appeal nationwide.

He said stronger visibility would also attract sponsors and fresh investments.

Adam England, Principal of Rugby School Nigeria, expressed optimism about the sport’s future.

“Nigeria has an energetic youth population and remarkable natural athleticism,” he said.

England said infrastructure and investment remained major obstacles to rugby development.

He called for stronger grassroots support and wider institutional backing.

Wuraola Hussain, match commissioner and coach of Golden Sharks RFC women’s team, praised the initiative.

She said the competition also served as a trial ground for national team selection.

“Regular tournaments are essential because many athletes lack sufficient match opportunities,” Hussain said.

Nunayon Travih, Director of Sport at the Lagos State Sport Commission, welcomed the tournament.

He said the initiative aligned with Lagos’ youth development agenda through sports.

Travih disclosed plans to introduce rugby in secondary schools across Lagos.

He said early exposure would expand participation and strengthen grassroots structures.

Adaeze Precious, captain of AJ Sharks, credited teamwork for her side’s victory. “Our success came from focus, determination and supporting one another,” she said.

She said the players-maintained confidence throughout the competition.

NAN also reports that the tournament attracted clubs, officials and stakeholders from across Nigeria.

The event also offered young players a platform to display talent and gain competitive experience.
