The Oyo State Government has established a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the abduction of students and teachers from Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026.

The commission, which is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and provide recommendations, will be inaugurated on Friday at the Executive Council Chamber, Governor’s Office, Ibadan, according to a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade.

Oyelade said the panel was constituted as part of the government’s efforts to uncover the facts behind the incident, determine the factors that contributed to the abduction, and develop measures aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.

The abduction of the students and teachers, which lasted for 56 days before their release, generated widespread concern across the state and renewed discussions on security challenges affecting communities in Oyo and other parts of the country.

Following the release of the victims, Governor Seyi Makinde announced plans to establish an independent inquiry into the incident. The governor also called on the United Nations to support an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping.

The governor had stated that a thorough review of the incident was necessary to understand what transpired, identify possible lapses, and strengthen security coordination among relevant agencies.

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry is expected to engage relevant stakeholders, examine available evidence, and provide recommendations that will guide the state government’s response to security threats, particularly in vulnerable communities.

The Oyo State Government said the move underscores its commitment to accountability, improved security planning, and the protection of residents across the state.
