Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has etched his name in the country’s sporting history after winning the men’s shot put gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a winning throw of 21.07m, becoming the first Nigerian to claim the title in the event.

The 33-year-old African record holder produced a composed performance in a tightly contested final, edging New Zealand’s defending champion Tom Walsh, who settled for silver with a best attempt of 21.03m. England’s Scott Lincoln completed the podium with a 20.99m throw to take bronze.

Enekwechi’s victory represents a landmark moment for Nigerian athletics, as the country had never previously won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s shot put.

His achievement also adds to a remarkable career that has seen him establish himself as one of Africa’s most accomplished field event athletes.

The gold medal was particularly significant for Enekwechi, who had come close to the title on previous occasions. He won silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, missing out on gold before finishing fourth at Birmingham 2022. His Glasgow performance completed a long-awaited climb to the top of the Commonwealth podium.

Entering the competition as one of the leading contenders, Enekwechi displayed the experience and consistency that have defined his career.

His 21.07m effort proved enough to hold off a strong challenge from Walsh, a two-time Commonwealth Games champion and one of the most decorated shot putters in the world.

Born in the United States to Nigerian parents, Enekwechi chose to represent Nigeria internationally and has since become a key figure in the country’s athletics programme.

He holds the African shot put record and has represented Nigeria at major global competitions, including the Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships.

His latest success continues Nigeria’s impressive showing at Glasgow, with the athletics team playing a major role in the country’s medal charge.

Enekwechi’s gold takes Team Nigeria’s overall tally to eight gold medals, strengthening the country’s position among the leading performers at the Games.

Beyond the medal itself, Enekwechi’s historic victory serves as an inspiration for Nigeria’s next generation of athletes, highlighting the country’s growing presence in field events traditionally dominated by athletes from other regions. His achievement further cements his legacy as one of Nigeria’s greatest-ever shot putters.
