The Super Falcons remain in contention for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup despite suffering a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of securing one of Africa’s four automatic tickets to the World Cup in Brazil. However, the Super Falcons still have another route to the tournament, although they now face a considerably more difficult qualification path.
Nigeria are among the four teams that lost their WAFCON quarter-final matches, alongside South Africa, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. The four nations will compete in a continental play-off, with only two teams earning the opportunity to progress to the global play-off tournament.
The Super Falcons will face South Africa in their next crucial encounter on Thursday. Victory over Banyana Banyana would secure Nigeria one of the two available continental play-off spots and keep their long-standing World Cup record alive.
For the Super Falcons, the match against South Africa has effectively become a must-win encounter. Another defeat would end Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 tournament and bring an end to their record of appearing at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.
Should Nigeria overcome South Africa, the Super Falcons would advance to the FIFA global play-off tournament, where teams from different confederations will compete for the remaining World Cup places.
According to FIFA, the first phase of the global play-off tournament is scheduled for November and December 2026 at a centralized venue. Six teams will participate, comprising two from the Asian Football Confederation, two from Africa’s CAF, one from South America’s CONMEBOL and one from the Oceania Football Confederation.
The teams will be ranked according to the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking before the play-off draw. FIFA said the format for this phase would be confirmed later, with two teams eventually progressing to the final phase.

The second phase is scheduled for February 2027 and will feature the two teams that emerge from the first phase alongside two representatives from CONCACAF, one from CONMEBOL and one from UEFA.
The six teams will then be divided into three pathways, with each pathway decided by a direct knockout match. The three winners will earn the final World Cup qualification places.
FIFA has also stipulated that teams from the same confederation cannot be drawn into the same pathway, adding another layer to the structure of the qualification tournament.
This means that only three teams from the global play-off process will ultimately secure places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
For the Super Falcons, the route to Brazil has therefore become significantly more challenging following the Cameroon defeat. Instead of qualifying automatically through a WAFCON semi-final appearance, Nigeria must now win their continental play-off and then successfully negotiate the global qualification tournament.
The Cameroon defeat was particularly painful because Nigeria conceded early and were unable to find an equalizer despite their pedigree and experience at the continental level.
The Super Falcons entered the tournament as the defending African champions and one of the continent’s most successful women’s football teams. Nigeria have won the WAFCON title a record 10 times and have traditionally dominated African women’s football.
Despite the setback, history remains firmly on Nigeria’s side when it comes to the World Cup. The Super Falcons have qualified for every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the inaugural tournament in 1991.
At the 2023 World Cup, Nigeria reached the Round of 16 before being eliminated by eventual finalists England following a penalty shootout.
The current qualification campaign, however, presents a different challenge. With no margin for error, the Super Falcons must quickly recover from their WAFCON disappointment, defeat South Africa and then navigate the global play-offs if they are to maintain their unbroken World Cup appearance record.
