For too long, Nigeria’s economic conversation has circled the same contradiction: a nation of extraordinary entrepreneurial energy shackled by an extraordinary energy deficit.
Every market stall powered by a smoke-belching generator, every tailor whose machine falls silent when the grid collapses, every agro-processor whose margins are eaten alive by diesel — each is a small monument to a national failure that has persisted through successive administrations.
It is against this backdrop that the Tinubu Light Initiative, TLI, unveiled in Abuja on 6 August 2026 by the National Board for Technology Incubation, NBTI,must be assessed. Honestly assessed, it is one of the most consequential enterprise-support ideas to emerge from the Renewed Hope Agenda — provided its ambition is matched by disciplined execution.
The premise is refreshingly clear-eyed. Rather than treating electricity as an abstract infrastructure problem, TLI reframes energy as working capital for the MSMEs that form the backbone of Nigeria’s productive economy.
Under Dr. Kazeem Kolawole Raji, NBTI has essentially argued that a naira saved on diesel is a naira available for raw materials, wages, equipment or expansion. That is not a slogan; it is arithmetic — arithmetic any market woman in Onitsha, any welder in Kano, any cassava processor in Ogun can verify from her own ledger.
The Scale is Audacious — And That is the Point
One million MSMEs. Fifty thousand direct jobs. A parallel $500 million financing commitment from Gigawatt Global for solar installations across Nigerian public universities, covering up to 90 per cent of qualifying project costs.

These are not modest numbers, and they should not be. Nigeria’s energy poverty is not a modest problem, and incrementalism has repeatedly proven inadequate to it.
What distinguishes TLI from previous interventions is its deliberate coupling of three agendas historically pursued in isolation:
– Energy access — through distributed renewable solutions targeted at productive users rather than merely residential consumers.
– Technology commercialisation — using the NextGen Innovation Challenge as a pipeline channelling indigenous innovation from prototype into national deployment.
– Industrial policy — creating demand-side pressure that could, if sustained, catalyse a domestic renewable-energy manufacturing ecosystem rather than perpetuating dependence on imports.
This convergence is where the initiative earns its seriousness. Isolated solar rollouts have come and gone; what has been missing is a framework that treats clean energy as simultaneously an enterprise-development tool, an innovation outlet and a manufacturing opportunity.
Where the Real Work Begins
Nigeria’s policy graveyard is crowded with well-launched initiatives that failed at implementation. Several questions demand honest answers as TLI moves from unveiling to rollout:
– Financing architecture. How will one million MSMEs afford these systems? Outright subsidy, pay-as-you-go leasing, cooperative aggregation, or blended concessional finance? The credit profile of the average Nigerian micro-enterprise will not survive a conventional commercial loan.
– Beneficiary selection. Who qualifies, who decides, and how is political capture prevented? Transparent, digitised enrolment — leveraging BVN, NIN and CAC registries — is not optional.
– After-sales and maintenance. Solar hardware without a servicing ecosystem becomes electronic waste within 24 months. The 50,000 projected jobs must include certified local technicians, not merely installers.
– Bankability of the university PPAs. Nigerian public universities are not historically bankable counterparties; a sovereign or multilateral guarantee mechanism will almost certainly be required.
The presence at the launch of the MacArthur and Ford Foundations, KawiSafi Ventures, Energy Access Ventures, Candi Solar, Solarise Africa and SolarSaver, alongside Chinese, Japanese, Canadian, French, Qatari, Emirati and British diplomatic missions, suggests the capital and partnerships needed are within reach. Converting proximity into commitment is the next test.
Going ForwardÂ
The Tinubu Light Initiative is not a silver bullet, and should not be sold as one. But it is something arguably more valuable: a coherent theory of change.
It says that the fastest route to industrialisation runs through the electricity meter of the small business; that innovation policy is meaningless unless it produces deployable technology; and that the transition to clean energy is not a concession to global climate opinion but a hard-nosed economic strategy for a country that can no longer afford the diesel bill.
If executed with transparent procurement, disciplined targeting, genuine local-content ambition, and a refusal to be reduced to a photo-opportunity, TLI could yet be remembered as the moment Nigeria stopped treating electricity as a cost of doing business and started treating it as the business of doing business.
The lights have been switched on. Keeping them on is the harder task.
