Euromatch, a European sports entertainment brand, has committed $7.5 million to sponsor the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, over the next three years in a partnership aimed at increasing the league’s visibility and commercial value.

Under the agreement, Euromatch will provide $2.5 million annually as part of its title sponsorship of the domestic league.

The partnership was announced on Wednesday in Abuja during the unveiling of Euromatch as the new title sponsor of the NPFL ahead of the 2026/2027 season.

Group Chairman of Euromatch, Sacli Semih, said the company’s decision to invest in Nigerian football was driven by the country’s economic potential and the quality of football talent available across the country.

Semih described Nigeria as a key market for the company, noting that Africa remains one of the fastest-growing regions for sports entertainment. “We are a growing sports entertainment brand from Europe, and football is our core product,” he said.

“Africa is one of the fastest-growing markets, and Nigeria is the heart of Africa. It is the biggest economy, in my view, with enormous potential.”

He said Euromatch considered Nigerian footballers to be among the most underrated talents in the world and believed the NPFL had significant commercial potential.

According to Semih, the company expects the partnership to generate stronger returns from its second year as the league improves its quality, organization and international visibility.

He explained that the investment would focus on improving the presentation of the NPFL and bringing aspects of the competition closer to European standards.

“When we transfer the Nigerian league to European standards, under the name Euromatch NPFL, the visibility of the league in Europe alone will increase,” Semih said.

He added that the partnership would also provide Nigerian players with a bigger platform to attract attention from international clubs, scouts and football supporters.

Semih noted that although many Nigerian players currently feature in top European leagues, there was limited international attention on the domestic competition where many of the country’s emerging talents develop.

“There are so many players playing in England and other top leagues, but nobody comes to watch the league here,” he said. “So, we are going to help people see the league. Doing that will also help our brand.”

The Chairman of the NPFL, Gbenga Elegbeleye, described the $7.5 million sponsorship as a major milestone in the league’s efforts to reposition Nigerian domestic football.

Elegbeleye said the partnership would help increase the league’s visibility, attract more spectators to stadiums and create additional opportunities for Nigerian players.

He said the NPFL had recorded progress in attracting supporters to match venues but acknowledged that there was still room for improvement in the organization and overall standards of the competition.

The NPFL chairman also disclosed that the league would continue to strengthen its club licensing regulations to ensure clubs meet the required administrative, financial and sporting standards.

According to him, Euromatch’s digital reach would give the NPFL an opportunity to connect with a much larger international audience.

Elegbeleye said the company recorded more than three billion views globally in one season, including about 101 million YouTube views from Nigeria.

He expressed optimism that the partnership would expose Nigerian footballers to more fans and potential opportunities outside the country.

“What we are doing is more visibility for the youth, and that is why we are here. We want to demonstrate the capacity of what we can do,” he said.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Ibrahim Gusau, also welcomed the sponsorship, describing it as evidence that efforts to stabilize and reposition the NPFL were beginning to attract major investment.

Gusau said stability was essential to building confidence among potential investors because sponsors needed certainty about the organization and timing of the league.

“I must say that I am the happiest man today because we have really worked hard for the last four years to ensure that we stabilize the league because it is the key,” he said.

He explained that uncertainty over the start and end dates of previous NPFL seasons had made it difficult to attract serious commercial partners.

“When you have a league where you don’t know when it will start and you don’t know when it will end, it is going to be difficult to bring anybody to invest his money in,” Gusau added.

The NFF president said continued improvements in stability, visibility and sporting standards would increase the commercial value of Nigerian football and encourage more private-sector investment.

The three-year agreement represents a significant commercial commitment to the NPFL and comes as stakeholders seek to make the domestic competition more attractive to supporters, sponsors and international audiences.

The 2026/2027 NPFL season is scheduled to begin on Friday, with the new partnership expected to provide additional momentum as the league enters a new phase of commercial development.
