Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has declared that he had not committed any crimes that would warrant his impeachment by the state’s lawmakers.

The governor told his supporters at the Assembly Complex, “Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment.”

The governor assured the state’s citizens they would reap the benefits of democracy and promised to address the issue at the appropriate time.

“Let me reassure the residents of Rivers that I will keep working to make sure you reap the benefits of democracy. I will speak to the media at the appropriate time,” he declared.

“Any attempt that is not justified will be resisted, My happiness is thepresence of everyone that came out to join in for the protest, I can go back home and sleep peacefully”, said Fubara.

As the House on Monday removed its leader, Edison Ehie in a new crisis amid rumors of an imminent impeachment process against Fubara.

Tear gas was fired outside the complex as the lawmakers, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, served Fubara with an impeachment notice before running for cover.

Speaking to his supporters who had demonstrated outside the Assembly Complex against the development, the governor claimed he had done nothing to merit the Assembly’s impeachment process.

This happened a few hours after the Assembly Complex caught fire on Sunday night.

Although it was unclear whether the fire was related to the political controversy, there have long been rumors of a rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory ,FCT.
