The Labour Party ,LP, has clarified that it currently has no plans to merge with the Peoples Democratic Party , PDP,to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress ,APC, in the 2027 general elections.

This statement comes in response to Atiku Abubakar’s recent suggestion that opposition parties should consider merging to defeat the APC in the upcoming presidential poll.

In a statement, LP’s spokesperson, Obiora Ifoh, emphasized that the party has not engaged in any discussions about a merger with the PDP. He pointed out that Atiku’s proposal was just an idea, acknowledging the importance of making democracy work in Nigeria.

Ifoh clarified that there was no mention of a merger between LP and PDP in their response. He emphasized the need for every Nigerian to be invested in ensuring the success of democracy in the country, highlighting the current challenges with the existing political system.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress ,APC, criticized Atiku’s merger plan, suggesting that he was struggling to accept the reality of his loss in the previous presidential election.

The APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, urged the PDP to focus on resolving internal party conflicts rather than contemplating mergers.
