The legal battle over the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa has been extended, as an Ikeja High Court adjourned his suit against the Lagos State House of Assembly to March 17.
Obasa, who was reinstated as Speaker on March 3, is challenging his January 13 removal over allegations of fraud, abuse of office, and gross misconduct. The lawsuit has drawn top legal minds, with senior advocates representing both sides.
At Monday’s hearing, lead counsel for the House of Assembly, Femi Falana, informed the court that Obasa’s legal team, led by Afolabi Fasanu, had served additional affidavits earlier in the day. He requested time for his clients to study and respond to the fresh documents.
Meranda’s counsel, Tayo Oyetibo, also sought an adjournment, citing serious fraud allegations contained in the new affidavits. He argued that his client needed adequate time to address the claims before the court.

In another development, Olusola Idowu announced his entry into the case as an incoming counsel representing the House of Assembly. This prompted Falana to request that the court first hear an application regarding the change of counsel before addressing other matters.
However, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro ruled that all applications—including injunctions, jurisdictional challenges, and the request for a change of counsel—would be heard together on March 17. She directed all parties to file, serve, and exchange necessary documents before the next hearing date.
Obasa’s impeachment sparked political tension within the Lagos Assembly, leading to the election of Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda as his replacement. However, the controversy took a new turn when Meranda resigned on March 3, paving the way for Obasa’s reinstatement.
With the next court session set for March 17, all eyes remain on the legal battle that will determine the fate of the embattled Lagos Speaker.
