Chief Shimite Winifred Bello, Special Adviser to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Trade and Export, was found dead in the early hours of Monday.
Her sudden death is drawing public attention as reports point to possible domestic violence.
Initial media accounts allege that Bello may have been murdered, with her husband identified as the main suspect.
Though an official government statement is yet to be released, the Delta State Police Command confirms that an investigation has commenced.
Bello’s husband is currently in protective custody. The Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, Bright Edafe, says the husband was the one who reported his wife’s death and informed police that he was receiving threats from her family. In response, the police visited his residence and brought him in to ensure his safety.

The circumstances surrounding Bello’s death remain unclear. Edafe explains that although the husband is not under arrest, the family of the deceased has formally approached the police, expressing suspicion about the cause of her death. This prompted a formal investigation into the incident.
“In situations like this, only an autopsy can determine whether the death was natural or due to other causes,” Edafe states. He adds that updates will be made available as the investigation progresses.
Earlier reports suggested that Bello died from a brief illness. However, developments indicate that further medical examination is required to determine the exact cause.
Shimite Bello, fondly known as “The White Eagle,” was a respected figure in Delta State. She earned a degree in Political Science from the University of Ibadan and was a Chief in Ebu Kingdom, Oshimili North Local Government Area. Her death has generated outrage across the state and on various social media platforms.
In reaction to the news, the Asaba Chapter of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association expresses profound grief over her passing. Meanwhile, the police maintain that the investigation will be detailed and guided by the outcome of the autopsy report.
