The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has strongly condemned the recent wave of defections by some of its elected officials in Delta State—most notably Governor Sheriff Oborevwori—who recently joined the All Progressives Congress, APC.
In a stern response, the PDP has vowed to take legal action to reclaim all political mandates won on its platform during the last election cycle.
In a statement released by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, the party emphasized that electoral mandates belong to political parties and not individuals.
It described the defections as not only morally reprehensible but also a direct violation of democratic principles and a betrayal of the trust reposed in the party by the electorate.
“The votes that brought these individuals to power were cast for the PDP, its manifesto, and its ideology—not for personal ambition,” the statement read.
“As such, any official who defects from the party must vacate the seat that rightfully belongs to the PDP.”

The party announced that its legal team has been activated and is currently reviewing constitutional provisions and precedents to file appropriate cases before the courts.
The PDP said it would pursue the matter to the highest level of the judiciary, including the Supreme Court if necessary, to set a precedent against political opportunism.
Party stakeholders in Delta State have also echoed the national body’s stance, accusing the defectors of selling out to the ruling party for personal gain.
Several former PDP lawmakers and local party leaders have expressed outrage, urging the national leadership to act swiftly and decisively.
This development has sparked intense political debate in Delta State, where the PDP has historically maintained a stronghold.
Observers say the legal battle could reshape the political structure in the state and test the resolve of the judiciary in enforcing constitutional integrity.
As of now, Governor Oborevwori and others who defected have not issued detailed responses to the PDP’s threat, though APC leaders have welcomed them warmly and described the defections as “a win for progressive governance.”
The PDP has insisted it will not let this act go unchallenged, promising to use every legal tool available to “reclaim what is rightfully ours.”
