Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago has donated ₦1 billion and 50 truckloads of food items to victims of the devastating flood disaster that recently struck Mokwa Local Government Area.
The relief package was announced during the governor’s on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected communities on Monday.
The flood, which damaged hundreds of homes and displaced scores of families, prompted swift intervention from the state government.
Addressing the residents, Governor Bago expressed deep sympathy for the losses suffered and pledged unwavering support to ensure the recovery and rehabilitation of affected persons.
In his remarks, Bago said that the state government would distribute ten trucks each of rice, beans, maize, millet, and sorghum—totaling 50 truckloads—directly to the victims through a transparent process.
A committee led by the Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, will oversee the distribution to ensure fairness and accountability.
“Today, I bring not only words of comfort but a commitment from your government,” Bago said. “We are providing ₦1 billion in relief funds and 50 trucks of grains to support your immediate needs. Beyond that, we will make sure you are not left homeless.”
The governor also revealed plans to resettle displaced residents, announcing that the state would provide both land and essential services for permanent housing.

He instructed the Ministry for Lands and Survey to issue a Certificate of Occupancy to the Federal Government to facilitate the swift commencement of resettlement home construction.
“While we await support from the Federal Government, arrangements are underway to move you from temporary camps to safer and more stable environments,” Bago said. “You will not be abandoned.”
The governor’s gesture received widespread praise from local leaders and stakeholders. The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, who accompanied the governor, urged the flood victims to remain resilient and assured them of legislative backing for continued support.
Also speaking, the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, thanked Governor Bago for showing “true leadership and compassion” during a time of great need.
He also lauded the contributions from the Federal Government, donor agencies, and well-meaning individuals who had offered aid.
Former Deputy Governor Alhaji Mohammed Ketso echoed similar sentiments, commending the governor for his proactive approach in addressing the disaster and mobilizing swift relief efforts.
As Niger State continues to grapple with the aftermath of the flood, Governor Bago reiterated his administration’s commitment to disaster preparedness and improved infrastructure planning to mitigate future occurrences.
“This is not just about responding to a crisis,” Bago noted. “It is about building a safer, stronger future for all Nigerlites. Together, we will rebuild—stronger than ever.”
The gesture adds to a growing list of interventions by the Bago administration to address humanitarian crises across the state, and marks a significant step toward restoring hope for communities affected by natural disasters.
