The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission , EFCC , Ola Olukoyede, has ordered the suspension of nighttime sting operations in all EFCC commands.
This decision is in line with newly reviewed procedures regarding the arrest and bail of suspects.
Olukoyede gave the directive in Abuja on Wednesday in reaction to the arrest of 69 suspected internet fraudsters by operatives of the Ibadan Zonal of the Commission in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Many of the suspects detained by the Command had already been released, according to a statement issued by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, and the remaining profiles were being processed right away.
Credible information suggesting the suspects were involved in fraudulent internet-related activities led to these arrests.
Law enforcement officials seized a significant amount of items during the operation, including 40 laptops, 190 cell phones, and fancy cars.
In response to the arrests, students from the Obafemi Awolowo University took to the streets, gathering outside the EFCC office to demand the release of their peers.
This public demonstration highlights the growing scrutiny of the EFCC’s activities and the importance of adhering to the rule of law in its operations.
The EFCC’s decision to discontinue nighttime sting operations is aimed at ensuring the protection of suspects’ rights and conducting law enforcement operations in accordance with established legal procedures.
