The former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa is under the spotlight as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, prepares to investigate him over allegations of misappropriating ₦43.5 billion in state funds.
His impeachment on Monday has intensified attention on the case.
Insiders at the anti-graft agency told Peoples Gazette that Obasa is likely to be arrested when he returns to Nigeria from the United States. His impeachment followed a report exposing his extravagant expenditures on luxury back-up vehicles.

“The evidence against him is overwhelming. This time he won’t be able to wriggle out. The case has been meticulously compiled, and we are ready to take action,” an EFCC official, speaking anonymously disclosed.
In 2020, Obasa faced a separate EFCC probe over claims that he spent ₦1.1 billion in just one week. However, he was cleared without charges.
Officials believe his current situation differs, with little chance of avoiding prosecution. “Heavy hammer is waiting to fall on him,” a source emphasized, highlighting the agency’s determination to hold him accountable.
Obasa’s influence appears to have waned, with key allies, including President Bola Tinubu, withdrawing their support.
Sources close to the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, confirmed that Obasa’s calls have been ignored, signaling his isolation from the Presidency. “His political connections have dried up. He’s on his own now,” a source disclosed.
With his impeachment and the looming EFCC investigation, Obasa’s political career remains uncertain. It is unclear whether he will return to Nigeria to serve as a floor member in the House of Assembly or avoid scrutiny altogether.
The EFCC has stated its commitment to pursuing the case without interference. “We have no political interference at all. He will clarify things to our detectives,” an EFCC official assured.
