The management of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Markudi, has ordered a one-week closure of the institution in response to rising security concerns.
This decision follows the abduction of four female students by armed men on campus late Tuesday night. The students were reportedly kidnapped around 8:30 p.m. while heading to a lecture hall.
The incident has sparked outrage among students, who have called for immediate action from the university management and authorities to secure the release of their colleagues.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the university’s Registrar, Dr. John David, on behalf of the management, expressed solidarity with the victims and their families.
The university announced a one-week mid-semester break, directing all students to vacate hostels by 4:00 p.m. on February 26, 2025.

The statement read: “Following the abduction of three students on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, by armed men near Zamfara Hostel and Ring Road in North Core, the University Management, after consultations with security agencies and stakeholders, strongly condemns this incident. The situation has been reported to government authorities, and security agencies are actively working to secure the release of the abducted students.”
Additionally, the statement confirmed that the Inaugural Lecture scheduled for February 26, 2025, has been postponed indefinitely.
The management urged all students and staff to remain calm as security forces continue their efforts.
The university also reassured the community that additional security measures are being put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
