The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has disclosed that 1,539 people died in road crashes along the Jos-Lafia-Makurdi corridor between January and March 2025.
Corps Marshal Shehu Muhammed made this known during a courtesy visit to Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State in Lafia on Wednesday, where the agency launched its “Operation Sanity” initiative.
Muhammed said the alarming figure is part of a larger national crisis. In 2024 alone, Nigeria recorded 5,081 road-related deaths and over 31,000 injuries. Globally, more than 1.19 million people died in road crashes that same year, with many victims coming from Africa.
The FRSC boss emphasized the urgency of reversing these trends. According to him, 30 deaths and 339 injuries occurred on the Jos-Lafia-Makurdi route in just the first quarter of 2025. He pledged that the commission would work closely with stakeholders to improve road conditions and safety standards nationwide.
He commended Governor Sule for infrastructure developments across Nasarawa State, including ongoing road reconstruction projects and construction of flyovers, which are expected to improve traffic flow and reduce accidents.

Muhammed also praised the state’s commitment to road safety through its support for “Operation Sanity,” which aims to raise awareness, enforce traffic laws, and reduce reckless driving. He encouraged other states to emulate Nasarawa in addressing the growing problem of road fatalities.
He highlighted that the economic impact of road crashes is equally severe, with Nigeria losing an estimated 2% of its GDP annually to traffic accidents.
In his remarks, Governor Sule commended the FRSC’s leadership and expressed concern over the rise in reckless driving. He pledged continuous support for the corps and announced his decision to join the FRSC as Patron of the Nasarawa State Special Corps Marshal.
Sule also congratulated Muhammed on his appointment as Corps Marshal and applauded his vision for reforming road safety operations in the country.
Nasarawa Sector Commander of the FRSC, Comfort Ochiba-Asom, added that the initiative would include public sensitization, distribution of safety materials, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations. She reaffirmed the corps’ target of reducing fatalities by 10%.
