The General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, William Folorunso Kumuyi, has stated the reasons why he will not hand over leadership of the church to any of his biological children, following widespread speculation over who would succeed him when he eventually steps down from the helm of the ministry.

The church is not a family estate to be inherited, but a spiritual institution under divine authority.

Kumuyi addressed the issue during a church service, where he responded to growing public debate suggesting that one of his sons could eventually take over the leadership of the ministry.

He dismissed the assumption, stressing that the church is not a private asset or family estate that can be inherited, but a spiritual institution governed by divine authority.

According to him, the speculation had gone as far as people questioning whether he would deliberately search for one of his children to install as successor after his tenure.

“Many people were speculating, is he going to hand over the church unto his son? Won’t he search for his first son, second son, where are they? Where do they live? Is he not going to hand over the church?” he said.

He, however, rejected the idea outright, insisting that leadership in the church cannot be determined by lineage or family ties.

“Well, it’s not his church. And because it’s not his church, Jesus said, ‘Upon this rock, I will build my church.’ It’s the church of the Lord Jesus Christ and nobody has right to hand it over to his son,” he stated.

Kumuyi further backed his position with references to early Christian leaders, noting that succession by biological inheritance has no biblical foundation.

“Peter did not hand over the church to his son. Paul did not have any son or wife, but Paul did not hand over the church to his son. And John did not hand over the church to his son,” he added.

He reiterated that leadership transition within the ministry must remain guided by spiritual calling rather than family succession, emphasizing that the church ultimately belongs to Christ.
