A retired controller of works at the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, AbdulRazaq Ajani was killed by assailants on New Year’s Day in Ilorin, just after returning from a holiday in Offa, Kwara State.
The attack occurred around 3 p.m. at his residence on Dele Gege Street in the Aderoju area, Tanke, Ilorin, where Ajani had just arrived with his family.
The assailants, believed to have trailed him from Offa, ambushed him as he returned home from spending the Christmas and New Year break.
A family member who spoke to reporters stated that four young men, aged between 18 and 22, were involved in the attack.
The exact method of their arrival remains unclear, but CCTV footage from Ajani’s compound provided some clues. The footage showed two of the assailants standing by the gate, one drinking from a plastic bottle as the other two walked into the compound.
When Ajani noticed the intruders from one of the sitting rooms of his home, he reportedly went to the door to engage with them.
At first, the suspects appeared to be speaking with him. Then, without warning, they overpowered him and attacked him viciously. The family watched in horror as the attackers used small axes to hack him to death in the presence of his wife and children.
The assailants quickly fled the scene after carrying out the brutal attack. Ajani’s family members were left in shock, and the sound of their screams drew the attention of neighbors.

By the time the police arrived, the house was stained with blood, and Ajani’s body had been removed. Witnesses noted that there were visible bloodstains on the walls and that Ajani’s remains showed signs of a savage attack.
Ajani, a retired civil engineer, had worked for the Federal Ministry of Works for several years before retiring four years ago.
He had, however, recently taken up a contract position with the ministry. His neighbors described him and his wife, who runs a popular local bakery, Reo Cakes, as well-respected members of the community.
Many residents of the area gathered at the house to express their condolences to the grieving family. A team of police officers visited the scene shortly after the murder to collect evidence and begin their investigation.
The Kwara State Police Command has responded. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun said investigation has begun but no one has been arrested.
“Yes, the incident happened. I can confirm that a retired controller of works was killed in the Tanke area. The police have intervened and are actively investigating the matter,” said DSP Ejire-Adeyemi.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue to search for those responsible for this heinous crime.
