The United Nations, UN, has declared July 7 annually as ‘World Amotekun Day’ to acknowledge the efforts of the Western Nigeria Security Network, code-named Amotekun Corps, particularly in Ondo State.
According to a statement issued in Akure by Adetunji Adeleye, Commander of Amotekun in Ondo State, the international recognition stems from the corps’ contributions to regional peace and crime prevention across southwestern Nigeria.
The affiliation was formally presented at the Amotekun headquarters in Akure by Ambassador Dr. Markwili Mgbara, Director of Information and Communications at the International Association of World Peace Advocates.
Dr. Mgbara explained that the recognition came under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council through the International Association of World Peace Advocacy.
He described the Ondo Amotekun Corps as the first state-owned security outfit to receive such international affiliation.
The affiliation certificate affirms that Amotekun is now a recognised security unit expected to collaborate with various UN offices. Amotekun, founded in 2019, reportedly aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the global agenda for peace and security by 2030.

The statement highlighted the corps’ roles in reducing crime, supporting farmers, securing highways, and protecting lives across the Southwest.
As a result, Amotekun is now eligible to participate in UN security and human rights forums, including the upcoming 80th Anniversary of the United Nations scheduled for September 22, 2025, in New York.
Adeleye, who also serves as Chairman of the Council of Amotekun Commanders, dedicated the honour to God and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for supporting Amotekun’s mission.
He recalled the agency’s difficult early days when insecurity kept farmers from their land and disrupted business activity. “Today, thanks to God and government support, farmers have returned, food insecurity has reduced, and the economy is improving,” he said.
Adeleye reiterated Amotekun’s commitment to working with other security agencies and maintaining public safety, noting that although no society is entirely crime-free, Ondo State has made notable strides.
